Transitions...

It’s an absolute honour to companion my clients as they delve into new spaces and places within themselves.

I am constantly in awe of the human ability to undergo intense periods of not just learning but also unlearning, as we evolve through a life of transitions.  As Justin observes:
"Life transitions either planned or forced provide unique challenges for individuals and their families in both the long and short term. I found working with Pippa during such a transition (a serious illness necessitating early retirement) to be not only a tremendous support but also a structured way to refocus and plan the next steps. It was tremendously reassuring to make conscious decisions about new and evolving priorities whilst learning to accept the things I could not change.
The unique blend of academic skills and spiritually based compassion Pippa brings provides an opportunity for individuals experiencing change in their lives to challenge themselves to see change as a positive rather than negative catalyst. Accepting that life naturally leads to change has been surprisingly empowering and acquiring the skills to manage change deeply reassuring.

Organisational change in Higher Education continues apace. When I first worked extensively with Justin it was in the context of his role as Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania, at the time of the merging of multiple Schools, to form a Super School within the Faculty of Health:

"For leaders in Higher Education our biggest challenge is how to maintain core business in periods of unprecedented change. Change is fast paced with both intrinsic and extrinsic drivers. Adapting dynamically to these drivers is often the differentiator between a successful and unsuccessful organisation unit. As Head of a new 'super' school including Medicine, Paramedicine, Psychology, Medical Research, Pharmacy and two research institutes I was challenged to balance long standing disciplinary identities with a vision for an integrated group that worked together in new ways...Pippa's unique expertise not only successfully supported key leaders to enable this to happen but opened minds to see spaces and opportunities that no-one knew existed before. Pippa has a deeply sensitive but effective way of working that empowers individuals but challenges their fundamental way of seeing themselves and their disciplines. Always pragmatic in her approach, Pippa has been able to support effective macro and micro change whilst ensuring core business continues, which gives great peace of mind to a leader."
The cyclic nature of change means that now, many years on, the super school structure has returned once again to its former state of separate Schools. Veterans of Higher Education are no stranger to these cycles, and aware that in a sense the change cycles represent an organisational system’s attempt to reconcile the competing demands that are in built into its governing paradigms (such as the necessary, laudable and often uneasy relationships between teaching, research, and community engagement in academic life.)
Living in and through the frequent systemic shifts and restructures is demanding.  Navigating it whilst remaining true to those aspects of it that are fundamental to our own highest values is a quest that sometimes feels like a full-blown Odyssey.  I am never bored.  Through powerful life events, pandemics and relentless restructures my clients and I venture on!

"Pippa and I had epic and soul enriching discussions, digging deep into what it means to flourish as a human in this complicated, messy, and beautiful world. Themes included: the future (what do I want?) and the nature and practice of leadership (how do I/can I lead?). Pippa was sensitive and responsive to my immediate situation, personal framework, and preferences, while encouraging openness to new thinking and practices. She suggested options and shone light on possible directions for the future - quickly and accurately gauging my capacity for change - to support what was right for me in the now.  Thank you, Pippa."
